Atherton has a population of over 5,800 residents. With a tropical climate Atherton was named after one of its founders, John Atherton, and was incorporated as a town in 1886. Built on the ide of an extinct volcano it is surrounded by several small hills known locally as the Seven Sisters.
The surrounding land around Atherton is used to grow sugar cane, peanuts, mangoes, maize , potatoes, avocados and macadamia nuts. Dairy and beef cattle are also reared in the area.
Atherton has two primary schools, one secondary school, one independent school and a TAFE campus.
